Walk down any pharmacy aisle in Lahore or Karachi and you will find onion hair oil from Rs. 400 to well over Rs. 2,000. The bottles look alike. What is inside them is not.
Why the price range is so wide
The cheapest oils are mostly mineral oil — a petroleum by-product that is clear, odourless and very cheap — with a small amount of onion fragrance or extract. Mineral oil sits on top of the hair and makes it look shiny for an hour, but it does not carry the plant compounds people buy onion oil for.
A genuine blend costs more because every ingredient is a plant oil or a real extract:
- Cold-pressed carrier oils such as virgin coconut and mustard, which yield far less than heat extraction.
- A proper onion extract, which keeps the sulphur compounds without the smell of raw juice.
- Slow infusion — herbs like curry leaf and fenugreek steeped for days, not minutes.
How to check a label in thirty seconds
- Look for paraffinum liquidum or mineral oil in the first three ingredients. If it is there, you are mostly paying for mineral oil.
- Check whether the carrier oil is named — "coconut oil" is better than "vegetable oil".
- Smell it. A real onion extract smells herbal and warm, not like cut onion or perfume.
- Ask for a batch number. A serious maker records every batch.
