In Pakistan the vest — the banyan — is not an accessory. It is worn under every kurta, shirt and shalwar kameez, in 40-degree summers and on cold Quetta mornings. Yet most men buy whatever is on the market stall and replace it three months later.
What makes a good vest
- Fabric. Look for 100% cotton, ideally combed cotton. Combing removes short fibres, so the knit is smoother, softer and pills less.
- Knit. A fine 1×1 rib stretches with you and springs back, so the vest sits close without clinging.
- Neckline. A bound, double-stitched scoop neck stays flat after washing. A thin, single-stitched edge is the first thing to curl.
- Armholes. Cut for movement, not so deep that they show under a shirt.
- Label. A woven label is kinder to the skin than a printed or scratchy tag.
Sleeveless or half sleeve?
The classic sleeveless banyan is coolest and disappears under a kurta. A half-sleeve vest absorbs underarm sweat before it reaches your shirt — useful for office wear and white shirts.
Getting the size right
Measure around the fullest part of your chest. As a guide: S fits 34–36 inches, M 36–38, L 38–40, XL 40–42 and XXL 42–44. Between sizes? Size up for a relaxed fit, down for a close one.
