A Hair Oil Routine for Pakistan's Heat, Dust and Hard Water
Summer heat, dust and hard water are hard on hair in Lahore, Karachi and Islamabad. A simple weekly oiling routine that suits Pakistan's climate.

Pakistan's climate asks a lot of your hair. Karachi's humidity, Lahore's dust and summer heat, Islamabad's dry winters and hard water almost everywhere all leave hair feeling rough and the scalp tight.
What each of them does
- Hard water leaves mineral deposits that make hair feel coarse and dull.
- Dust and pollution settle on the scalp and need gentle, regular cleansing.
- Heat and air-conditioning dry the scalp out, especially in summer.
A simple weekly routine
Twice a week: oil the night before you wash
Massage a teaspoon of a light, cold-pressed oil into the scalp for four minutes and leave it overnight. Oiling before washing means the shampoo lifts dust and the oil together, and the lengths are protected from stripping.
Wash day: mild shampoo, then conditioner
A sulphate-free shampoo is kinder in hard water. Condition the lengths, not the roots.
Once a week: finish with a cool rinse
A final rinse with cool water helps hair feel smoother.
Choosing an oil for the climate
In humid Karachi, a lighter blend that washes out in one go is more comfortable than heavy mustard oil alone. In dry northern winters, a richer blend with coconut and mustard feels more nourishing. A balanced blend — coconut as the base with kalonji, onion, fenugreek and aloe — works across seasons.
