How to Wash Cotton Innerwear So It Lasts

Good cotton lasts for months when it is washed well — and wears out in weeks when it is not.

Washing

• Wash whites separately from colours.
• Use cold or warm water. Hot water shrinks cotton and tires elastic.
• Turn underwear inside out to protect the waistband.
• Use a mild detergent; skip bleach, which weakens fibres.

Drying

• Line dry in shade. Harsh sun yellows whites and hardens elastic.
• If you tumble dry, use a low setting.

Keeping whites white

Soak white vests for 30 minutes in warm water with a spoon of baking soda before washing once a month.

Socks

Wash inside out, pair them before washing (or use a mesh bag) and replace pairs as a set.

Ironing

Vests can take a warm iron. Never iron elastic waistbands.
